Who says they have to accept it.  It could happen slowly and most people
wouldn't even notice what was happening.  If the whacko-right wing-NRA /
militia nuts are correct and the other 99% of the population is wrong, this
is exactly what the US government is doing right now and they are the only
ones astute enough to notice.   First they take away your Uzi, then your
rights to free speech, than your right to vote.

This country was on the brink of a pretty massive war, die to the Cuban
Missile crisis...


Besides, after the Kennedy assassination, this country was in turmoil.
That was probably the most important event in our parent's generation.
Couple that with a quick bit of McCarthyism, two dashes of Jingoism,
multiply by the KGB threat (Kennedy) and the Cuban Missle Threat, and a
strong enough leader could eventually pull the strings to get the job done.

I can't say that I completely understand the mindset back then, but I am old
enough to remember performing Bomb Shelter Drills in grammar school!
