I was thinking more along the lines of defenses. Blasters & Chargers get
armour; Hotshots & Screamers don't. The Hotshot invulnerability is pretty
handy; the Screamer version only protects from other Screamers.
I certainly think the Screamer attack is quite nice. Although I think the
Shatter trick should be bigger; it's such a cool effect, after all.

I'd check with the player first. Many players get annoyed if the GM changes
their character on them. Think of it this way - as GM, you get to play with
dozens of different characters, but players only get one.
But if the player's cool with it, or the game contract expressly lets you do
things like this (as mine does), then I say go for it. Maybe not permanently
deaf, but certainly the 'hard of hearing' version.
