You have to step back and remove the sarcasm filter to get a feel of what
things were really like.  It's interesting to read for the aspects of
western life that were so mundane that Clements didn't bother to mock - yet
these aspects are foreign to our perceptions.

Of course - if it wasn't for the satire, this would easily be one of the
most boring things I've ever read outside of a classroom.  :-)
