Consider who they are selling to.  If the capture these 8 thugs in a small
town who would want to buy these 8 horses at $75 per?  And who is buying all
the other gear?  If they're selling to a store owner he's not going to pay a
lot because he needs to mark it up to sell it himself.  And it's used goods
as well.  Just how many gunbelts and single action Colt's does a farmer from
East Nowhere Nebraska really need?  

So consider the local "economy" when allowing them to liquidate their
"loot".  Suddenly they might have more junk than they can carry around and
no cash.  A barter economy isn't entirely unknown in the Old West even then.
Combined with Derek's inflated prices and the quality of the goods, this
might do it for you.
