Nope. You're right on the mental duel, just think of the cards as the
manifestation and final step of it--where the huckster focuses the magic
into the real world.

But the cards--and looking at them--have been there as an integral (and
necessary) mechanic since day one.

As always, though, if it doesn't work for you, change it. :-)
