Re: [DL] Barbed wire - thinking (long)

Okay, here's some info I picked off of
http://www.lvol.com/lvoleg/hist/lvhist.html , the Las Vegas Online
Entertainment Guide. Quick summary:

1844: John C. Fremont camps at Las Vegas Springs during an overland
expedition.

1855: Mormon settlers build an adobe fort to protect the Los Angeles-Salt
Lake City mail route.

1858: Mormon settlers abandon the "Mormon Fort".

1864: Nevada admitted to Union.

1890: Railroad developers decide that Las Vegas Valley is a perfect location
for a stop facility and town.

Summer, 1904: First railroad grade into Las Vegas begins. Las Vegas begins
growing as a tent town of saloons, stores and boarding houses.

January, 1905: With rails connected, the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt
Lake Railroad makes its first run from California eastward.

May 15, 1905: Town of Las Vegas is formally established.

I checked several more sources, but these seem to be most of the major
events in the Las Vegas area. Of course, with the Reckoning, anything's
possible. The Vegas area would be one of a number of "last stops" before the
Maze and Lost Angels, especially with the springs providing fresh water.

As for inventions, here's a quick list of some major inventions from the
period:

1860: Can Opener
Internal Combustion Engine
Linoleum
1861: Barbed Wire Fence
1862: Gatling Gun
1865: First Antiseptic Surgery
1866: Torpedo
Dynamite
1868: First Practical Typewriter
Railroad Air Brake
Plastics
1874: First Practical Use of Barbed Wire
1875: Submarine
1876: Telephone (3,000 in 1876)
1877: Phonograph
Gas Engine
Carbon Microphone
1878: Electric Light
1879: Filament Lamp
1880: Innoculation
1884: Motor car
Airship
Fountain Pen
Steam Turbine
1885: Motorcycle

Found this info in the "Writer's Guide to Everyday Life in the 1800s" (ISBN
0898795419). Hope it helps...

I thought... and I could be 100% wrong here, but I thought that Vegas
didn't come about till late 1950's / early 1960's in the days of Ruby,
the guy who shot oswald, who shot kennedy....

Am I correct?
