No experiences here, however you could take some inspiration from
Western films (or just films in general) which usually have one or
two people as the lead characters and with the rest of the cast being
in a "supporting" role.
For example, War Wagon stars John Wayne (PC) an aggrieved rancher,
trying to rob the war wagon. He needs a good gunslinger and so ropes
in Kirk Douglas (NPC), they have a bit of a history and so there is
some good interaction there. They flesh out their plan and
realise they need an explosives expert (another NPC) ... Mix in some
complications (read, love interest, in this case) and some Indians
and you are off and running.
That said I would probably take one of two options:
(1) Give the PC a number of contacts that he could get in touch with
and have them turn up for an adventure or so and then leave to go
back to their normal life (now owed a favour from the PC that they
will cash in, in the future).
(2) Let the PC play two characters, balancing them with
roleplaying/combat capabilities, and then fill in the rest of the
posse with NPC's as I saw fit for the adventure. Create a backstory
as to how they all got together or introduce posse member and have
them join up as you go along so they become part of the continuing
story.
I think I few posses out there include the odd NPC, I'm sure
Daphene mentioned one in her posse's write up.
Anyway, just a few thoughts.
