[DL] Period Fiction?

I was wondering (as the lady who lives on top of me begins her daily
wailing... don't ask) whether anyone can recommend good period fiction?
Anything from Civil War to Western, and preferably with a bit of an edge to
it.

I've got some DeRosso and Estleman, the obligatory Elmore Leonard works, and
am dealing with the first of Bernard Cornwell's Starbuck chronicles (can I
have the rest please, Daphne?), but am looking for something really good.

Then again, I'm also getting ready to write something myself, so...

(Oh, and I've read the PEG trilogy, thanks.)
