[DL] Hexslinger Required (long)

Just wondered if anyone on the list could help me with a little
inspiration.

I have a character in my posse who is a hexslinger (as in Law Dogs,
not a huckster).  Born in the south he was brought up riding the
Mississippi on the riverboats.  Due to some reason that I cannot
remember at the moment he was brought up by his uncle, who made his
living off of the riverboats and taught him the ways of hexslinging. 

During one trip, a particularly big poker game was held, which his
uncle won.  Scuffles ensued and when the character woke up he found
his uncle dead and the other players vanished.  So he set out to track
them down and gain vengeance.  

During his travels he became tainted, where he found he had impulses
to commit evil deeds and always had to fight against them. Thus he
became a grim and mean gunslinger always fighting against his natural
impulse to shoot first and talk second.

The character has survived over a year of consistent playing, however
as his hexslinging mentor is dead there has been no real way for him
to gain new hexes.  I don't mind him gaining the odd hex from Hoyle's
method, however I want to keep the two methods separate (as does the
player).  Anyway, he is now sitting with 40+ bounty points and is
looking for ways to spend them.

Essentially he needs a mentor, however I don't want to present him
with one all gift wrapped and ready for Christmas, and I was wondering
if anyone out there had any ideas that would fit with the character
and not be a too obvious opportunity for the character to advance his
hexslinging knowledge?

All I had come up with was to introduce a possible mentor but making 
him an outlaw, joining up with him in order to learn his hexes would 
conflict with the characters desire to resist his taint.  However it 
would be a situation that the player would have to weight up the 
options, roleplay through and decide on a course of action (with 
consequences).
