Normally a character can take four wounds to any one location without dying.
At five, you're 'maimed,' and depending on the location, it's likely you're
going to die from it (like the head or guts area). Remember to divide your
total of damage points by the character's size increment (usually 6 if there
are no edges or hindrances to change it).
Wind damage is harder to die from.
You're right that after a good shot, the chances of your dying are higher.
However, guns that do 3d6 damage typically average out to two wounds per
shot, when the shot hits home (harder than you think under certain
circumstances).
There's also those Fate Chips, which save your kiester in a major way by
negating wounds (this is all in your Player's Guide under 'combat,' and as
Marshal, you've got a number of shortcuts listed in the Marshal's Guide for
your bad guys).
Don't worry: players are harder to kill than you think. We're a tenacious
lot ;-)
