[DL] Initial comment and question from the Newbie

Hello everybody,

I've been lurking on the list these past couple of days. Two days ago I got
my . . . core rules (?) . . . players guide (?) [what do you call the
book?]. I'd like to make a comments and pose a question.

I've noticed the seriousness that marshals take in keeping much of the
Weird West secret from players. (I hope veterans will excuse any mistakes I
make with the parlance.) As a player, I completely appreciate the spoiler
spaces and subjects warning me of insider info. I would much rather prefer
to experience the essence of the game world through play.

Which brings me to my question; what book is the actual core rule book?
Searching the Pinnacle web site, it seems there are two core books: the
players' guide and the Marshal's handbook. I had thought the combined core
rule book out of print. But two days ago that is exactly what I got, the
hardcover Pinnalce book 1001 "Deadlands: The Weird West Roleplaying Game".

What is the difference between this book and the Players' Guide? Is there
information in the Players's Guide not in the book I have? (I would think
there must be.) Is it worth another $25 investment if I already have the
1001 book? ("Worth" might not be the appropriate word.)

Our initial session is set for Sunday. I'm at a loss for a character
concept at the moment. Thanks to those who have suggested video rentals to
put me in the mood and get my creative juices flowing. My wife suggested a
couple of characters. A stable boy, which didn't ignite and roleplaying
sparks, (although I just remembered Ron Howard's role in "The Shootist",
and a stage coach driver. That one might be interesting. Does anyone have
any archetypal ideas for a stage coach driver? How about a pony express rider?

Thanks for the warm welcome to the Deadlands List.
