Chessex makes vinyl maps in two sizes that already have a grid on them.
They come in hex and square grids, both 1" scale. Each 1" square represents
whatever increment you choose. In your case, I'd suggest 1 hex/square = 1
yard (or maybe 1:2).
The maps run about $15 for the small map (Battlemats, 23" x 26") and about
$30 for the larger one (Megamats, 34" x 48"). The beauty of the maps is
that you can use wet erase markers to draw on them. The bad news is,
Chessex is out of them until the end of this month.

I took a large dry erase board and scored it with an exacto knife to
create a grid of 1 inch squares. The squares each represent a space two
yards across (or more if we need something large scale). We use miniatures
if we have a good space to lay out the board, but usually we just mark
positions on it with the pen. The beauty with the board is that you can
draw buildings and rooms and such right on it and then just wipe the whole
thing off when you're done.
