I agree, 
don't argue, just leave hime home.
The Marshall can make a list of ranchhand chores,
get up,
milk the cow,
check the cattle,
clean the barn,
go to bed.

Ok, now he gets to do this everyday.
Nothing happens to him, he gets no chips, he has no adventure.  snore.

Or while he is out on the range, the rest of the ranch is destroyed by the evil - whatever you are hunting.  Ta-da, he now has a reason, revenge, or the old champions disadvantage "failure to protect".
