I have a few questions about the HJs that I didn't want to bother the rest
of the list with, so I figured I'd ask you privately.

1) Did the Hangin' Judges really "happen", so to speak, as far as the
land-snatching scheme goes?  I've tried doing searches on Hiram Jackson and
Luther Kirby and I can't find anything.

Nope. Their names are drawn from our real-life ancestors, though I'm not sure
whose. Mine is Swindall.

2) Do the Judges wander completely alone or are they sometimes together?  I
figured if I ever threw one at my posse (yeah, big "if" :) ) and I didn't
want them to be able to take him out I could have another one come along as
a sort of deus ex machina, but I wasn't sure if they ever work together or
if they're totally solitary.  I'm also wondering because I'm thinking of a
particular scene for when I paint my computer case, which would involve a
"trial" with all 5 present and ready to hang someone.  It would be called
"Court Is In Session".  I'll send you a picture or two if/when I get it
done.

Use them however you want. There's no reason they might not travel  together.

3) How far from the Chisolm Trail will the Judges wander?  I remember
something being mentioned about the generic Lower Court Judges being more or
less bound to it, but I can't remember if anything was mentioned about the
Big 5 themselves (it's not in the AR).

Probably not too far without provocation, but they would A) chase someone
down who really pissed them off to the ends of the earth, and B) they are
sometimes summoned by Black River far and wide. Maybe they stick around a
while sometimes.
