Re: [DL] Butterbars?

A butter bar is a 2nd Lieutenant in the army, air force and Marine Corps or
an Ensign in the Navy. They are the most junior commissioned officer rank.
90% are fresh college graduates that go through a rudimentary basic
training. Most also go through a basic career school, but not all. They
are in effect 22-24 year old inexperienced novices thrown in to a position
of leadership. They are responsible for and in charge of, in an infantry
unit, a platoon of around 30-40 enlisted men. Lucky ones will have good
Sergeants take them under wing and teach them how to be good leaders, but
not all are lucky. The other 10% are "mustangs" former enlisted men that
gain their commission. They are usually a little better off and have some
experience. The majority however do not. It is, in effect the equivalent
of hiring a college kid straight in to a mid-level management position with
no prior experience.
