That all depends on what part of Montana you are planning to be in.  The 
Eastern half(or so) is mostly rolling plains with various muntain ranges 
thrusting obsceanly out.  It is moderate in the summer but very cold in the 
winter (30-60 degrees below zero, depending on the wind chill).  It is also 
fairly dry but not like a desert.  Another thing of note is when the soil in 
East Montana gets wet it turns to gumbo-a dense very sticky substance that 
makes cross country travel difficult and it will ball up around animals 
hooves.  They have a ball of the stuff in the museam in Miles City that was 
pulled off a cows leg and it is about the size of a basketball.
