During the Wild West-type era, people were generally much more
"live-and-let-live."  The Marshal probably would chuckle and ask the
posse to get the Hell out of his office.  If they did anything dumb
later, like shoot the widow to death, he'd hang 'em high and dry.  "Not
Guilty by reason of insanity" only existed in the big cities, and being
locked up in an asylum was often worse than prison or a hangin'.
