Interestingly enough, when the military asked Heckler and Koch to come up
with an automatic shotgun in the late 1970s, the weapon they produced (the
CAW) was designed around metal shells.
    On another note, high end sporting cartridges are sometimes still made
of metal.  I have an empty old Holland & Holland 12 bore cartridge sitting
on my desk made out of a silvery metal.
