[DL] Re: Whitworth Rifles

The Puckle gun was the one that fired 'round balls at
Christian and square ones at Turks.' It was an old,
impractical flintlock revolver. A good idea but the
technology was not there yet.

Whitworth hexagonal rifling was used for both rifles
and cannon. Some of the CSA's best cannon were
Whitworths but the ammunition was expensive and hard
to get.

Britain used a variety of early mechanical 'machine
guns' including the Gardener, Gatling and Nordenfelt.
