Very mundane explanation I'm afraid.

Spirit Lamp – a lamp in which alcohol or a methylated
spirit is burned.

Selected due to the fact that alcohol burns without
the soot or "evil vapours" common to oil lamps. Thus
are better things to use in a hospital.
