During 1835 there was a period of architecture called
the egyptian revival during which there was a lot of
building made with a egyptian motif including a
couple of prisons and courthouses. The Egyptian look
was especialy popular with cemetary entrances and
along the mississipi river, which include the towns
of Cairo, Karnak, Memphis, and Thebes.

Neil Gaimen's novel "american gods" breifly centers
on the presence of egyption mythos in american in a
somewhat depressing way.
