Well for one, if you got a foggy idea you want to throw out to see what
people think, and it turns out to be pretty stupid after you've had a
chance to think about it, a list serve will make it a brief blip on
folk's radar, with a forum, the lame things you think up and post at 3 in
the morning are on public display for months on end.

A list serve also just seems more dynamic, you do get a lot of "Me too"
messages but you also get a lot of people chiming in feedback they would
never bother with posting on a forum, and when you do throw out a few
ideas and get a few "cool stuff" comments, you get the encouragement to
keep posting new idea for general viewing.
Also with a forum you have to decide to go and look at deadlands stuff,
with a mailing list it there when you check your mail, all new stuff,
with titles, and deletetable if your ain't interested at the moment.

Then thier's trying the rigaramoll of getting another username and
password approved and then trying to remember what they are, not a major
task, but when you look in a forum for the first time and see something
you want to post on, its just annoying to have to go through a buracratic
process to be allowed to post.
