Look at your messages to the list.  When you are replying to
a message, your system automatically copies the entirity of
the message you are replying to, and you are just typing a
short note above that.

People who get the digest version of the list, get all of
the messages listed one after another.  That means they have
to scroll past all that useless stuff your system copied to
read the next message.  It's considered polite to delete
anything unrelated to your reply, so those guys don't have
to scroll through it.
