well - i'm a lightweight gun nut and don't have HoE yet, but i'l throw
common sense to the wind and give it my half cents worth !

depends on how accurate you want to be. odds are the length of his old
cartridges are going to be too long and not fit the breech of a newer
gun. Also the powder will be less refined than a more cartridge, fouling
the gun pretty quickly (reliabaility rating - lower away !).

of course, if you want to keep it nice & simple i'd just say if the
caliber is the same then they're okay to use. except cap & ball ammo -
no way Jose !

oops, answered this in 1. on reflection - i'd go for the powder fouling
the weapon and drop its reliability.

if time passes consistently in the hunting grounds then the ammo would
probably be pretty much useless, the powder would get damp just from
moisture in the atmosphere unless the cartridges were sealed in an
airtight container. 'course - as always its you call :)

hehe - blind leading the blind !

one interesting point i've just remembered - shotgun shells would almost
certainly be knackered. In the late 19th Century they'd be waxed
cardboard not the plastic casing we see today. Ain't no way no how
cardboard is going to last 200 years ! & i'm not sure whether a modern
pump shotgun wouldn't just tear a cardboard shell up with its action.
