Two thoughts came to mind while I read this thread.
One, ghost rock pollutes (that icky, sticky black gunk/stain), and some
people (particularly richer types) might want a non-polluting renewable
energy source (Why pay for GR when Solar is almost free, after
installation?).
Two, there are always people looking at new things, even if they're not
necessary, inefficient, or not desired by the populace at large. Could be
that Solar cells were indeed invented, but no-one really took to them, so
they were exceedingly rare.
