Go with the aura, but remove Grim Servant o' Death.

He's a renegade automaton - maybe he likes flowers.  With Grim Servant of
Death, he would never be eligible for the job of Town Defender.

Maybe it's cliche, but I like the story of the Frankenstein befriending a
town/tribe/group of child survivors and becoming their protector for a
couple of years.

Let the automaton know true happiness and acceptance.

Then yank it from him.
