haven't read this book but WarDay by Whitley and Strieber is good for nuke war
info, too.   Once upon a time(before I hit Organic Chemistry) I was intending
on being a radiation biologist and read all I could about the stuff.   
There is a great idea for a "finder" type, someone who specializes in finding
and reuniting people seperated by the war.  The authors have one of the women
s-f writers they know be the finder(CJ Cherryh or Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, i can
never keep them straight).  There might not be much use for this type of
character since HoE is 13 years after the Big Bang, but could possibly be
used.
