Just do what I do: Use the Paranoia-style combat sequence.

Me: "The entire town is surrounded by a carpet of armored, flesh
eating cockroaches. The bugs are converging on the town. Bob, what
does your character do?"
	Bob: "Uh..."
Me: "Right. Tim, how about your character?"
Tim <grinning at Bob>: "My character attempts to ride his horse
through the swarm of roaches to go warn the townspeople."
Me: "Okay, Bob's character stands there looking dumbfounded at the
swarm of roaches. Tim's character attempts to ride his horse across the
carpet of armored, flesh-eating cockroaches. Did I mention these
buggers are slick? Ever try to walk across a carpet of marbles? That's
gonna require a horse-ridin' roll..."

Seems to work well enough. After a few instances of "so-and-so stands
dumbfounded at all the activity going on," the combats start going a
little quicker.
