Just to drift off topic in another direction, I once had Bundeswehr field
rations.  

Their class As were pretty good (more pasta than you can ever eat along with
a beef sauce and some veggies) but then anything new is better in those
circumstances.  The class C rations were better than MREs but they were
basically tinned food like you'd see in a store (a German grocery store that
is).  

For an idea I'd suggest going to a food-import store that has imports from
German.  Tins of liverwurst, etc.  Dry crackers (there were these German
cookies, tasted great but it would suck every ounce of salvia from your
mouth, your buddies mouth and your company commander's mouth!) and such.
Not bad but like I said anything new ...
