Re: [HoE] HOE Char Sht
Greetings,
I guess I'll field this one. The character files are saved in standard
ASCII text format. Any word processor, Windows Notepad, or Windows Wordpad
can open them ok, as well as the good old MS-DOS prompt. There is nothing
special about them. You cannot open them from within the character
generator, however.
As for the screen colors, here's the story. In the Deadlands version of
the software, I use the flame yellow/orange background from PEGs old web
site as the screen background. This is fine as long as you're running in
16-bit or higher color, but looks like crap in 256-color or less. In order
to avoid this problem, I decided that the program should detect the number
of colors that the screen is displaying when the program is loaded, and
either display the bitmap or a solid color. In order to do so, I have to use
a special Windows library file. In Windows 95, this works fine, but under
Windows NT the procedure causes a crash, due to incompatibilities between
the Windows 95 API and the Windows NT API.
In order to keep my goal of NT-compatibility, I currently have to
create an NT specific executable, which has the "detection" feature
disabled. In this version, the program ALWAYS displays a solid color
background. Running the Windows 95 version loads either one based on your
screen colors. This applies to both the Deadlands and the HOE version of the
software.
Thanks,
