One of the more typical things that cause a child to join up is simply that
the child is sneaky enough to follow the other PCs whether they want her
along or not. The kid, being a kid, thinks of the horrors as "baad" but
still wants to travel with her "friends". Think of the annoyance factor
involved in having the kid always turn up in camp the night after they left
her in an orphanage or the local kindly family. Also, while the kid has a
high guts rating, there should be severe penalties if the kid or one of her
friends is wounded (when they realize how horrible the wasted west truly
is). "Mommy, the baad thing hurt me" (Mommy is a drugged up, cybered-out
templar with a 2-handedsword, poor baad thing)

In case you haven't noticed, many characters tend to be a bit of both.

Also, being a kid, overawe versus adults should be penalized, but not vs.
other kids or people who are slightly cramped for mental space. The Gm
should penalize the kid vs. adults always, and the STR should be reduced.
In closing, the kid Archetype is a kind of exceptional kid, not the normal
type, but I feel they should be a great and unceasing source of annoyance
and frustration, like kids are.
