   Maybe its a picture of his Mother and younger brother before the war.  
Shortly into the war, a small band of Union soliders over-ran his farm and 
gutted them.  Thats what turned him evil (down the path at least).  If the 
players can find the bayonet that was used to kill them, they may have a 
chance
