Re: [HOE] Urban Renewal cover
OK, time for my two cents (would ya believe that's the first time I've
ever said that on the list?):
Those of you who were at GenCon and to a lesser extent, Origins) might
have noticed a change in the demographics of the attendees. If you
looked around, you saw a lot more women attending the Con. More
importantly, you saw a lot more women attending the Con alone.
Previously to this, most (I realize not all) women at gaming conventions
were dragged into gaming and to the con by gamer boyfriends who didn't
tell their unsuspecting significant others that gaming and conventions
are mainly comprised of swarthy, frustrated youth who want their sexual
gratification in every single publication they purchase, as opposed to
breaking down and occasionally buying an issue of Hustler to relieve
their frustrations.
what this means is that game material should be increasingly suited to
sell to women as well as men. you could take this two ways: One, you
could make the art and situations in the game dramatic without
overstating too much in any direction. Or, two, you can assume that the
new crop of women in gaming are just as misanthropic as the repressed
hunchbacks who've been our stereotypical representatives since 1982, and
start putting bodybuilder guys in bannana hammocks all over everything.
One of these routes will improve the quality of gaming significantl. The
other will be a step back into obscurity and tastlessness.
