[HOE] Campagins: pregens vs. making up your own

Hey all, I had a thought on the subject of campaigns and all.
My campaign is almost entirely made up of adventures that I have made up
myself or taken from other sources (I love the web) and modified the hell
out of. This has worked great and I've found that my campaign has
developed along lines that never would have been possible following the
pre-gen adventures.

Likewise the marshall that runs me in HoE has a fanatical hatred for
pre-gens after some bad ravneloft experiences. So all of his adventures
are home-spun.

But the flip side is that I kind of feel like I've missed out on a lot of
the story. The Tower triology (this is DLs BTW), Ghostbusters, Gomorra,
etc. are all things I've never used.
But on the third side of the coin I've been able to really mold and modify
my campaign to fit my (and the player's) wishes a lot more.

So I was wondering what other people's thoughts/experiences were with the
two styles? How successful have people been at working in the pre-gens
into a campaign that deviates from the standard storyline?
