What about a new critter called a "Strainer" (picture the Braincrawler
things from D&D that fed off psionics). Basically this creature attaches
itself to someone's back of the neck and feeds off their powers. Any time
someone tries to use an AB the energy that normally would go to "power it"
whether that is strain or a templar's faith or whatever, get's drained
away by the Strainer.
The evil junker plants these things on them and the posse discovers that
they cannot be removed (well they can, but it seems like the host would
die during removal, giv'em a wound or two if they keep trying). The junker
agrees to remove the Strainers from the ABs if the whole posse "tests" his
new devices.
Then to add insult to injury, when they do finally get through the junker
just walks up with a taser and shocks the Strainers off.
