To be honest Theo, from my perspective this is basically what the
Reknown edge already does, right down to the fact that one's reputation
can be both positive and negative. I see where you're coming from I
think...you're saying that since it can be both a good and a bad thing
based upon situation, balance the cost of the "hinderedge" to zero and
just choose the "degree" of fame/infamy. However, all you're really
doing here in effect (IMO) is offering something for nothing, which I
don't agree with.
Some other edges can have this "double edged" effect. For example,
having Dinero is good, but word could get around that a waster that has
it always seems to have some extra scratch, making him a possible target
for robbery. Friends in High Places can have the same effect as
Reknown. If your friend is powerful or well known, it can be good to
have him on your side...however, he might just as easily have earned
some "Enemies in High Places", becoming a target by association.
Someone with the Law Dog edge is both respected by the lawabiding, yet
hated by the criminal element. As with these situations (and Reknown) a
player taking the edge has to be aware in the possibility of possible
negative repercussions. Heck, even the Outlaw hindrance might garner
some clout with other Outlaws. Again, it would depend on the situation.
So, bottom line, while I think I understand your intent, I just can't
see giving "fame/infamy" for free. You might want to leave the "zero
pointers" to the Veterans (Weird, Wasted, Psychic). On a positive note,
I rather think "hinderedge" as a term for describing such two sided
edges and hindrances (Veterans included) is a good one. :-)
