That's the gist of the matter. There are no white
knights to come riding over the hill, the cavalry is
not going to be coming in time, and superman can not
hear us.

We'll just have to do it all ourselves, one step at a
time, until it's won.

Scattered communities across the globe slowly put
themselves back together while all the time struggling
to keep themselves alive. 

Or everyone will be die and humanity will be forgotten
as anything other than a footnote in history ;-)

One way or the other. 

As long as it isn't an "Independence Day" ending.
e.g. - "So that's how we do it! Fire up the wireless
and tell the world! Woo hoo! We win!"
