RE: [HOE] Quick question.... (Got spoilers now...)
SPOILER SPACE
Go away, you players you!
The Manitou are whispering ideas of new inventions to the Mad Scientists
of the 1870's and on. However, they get their info by traveling forward
in time... To when the Last War started. Actually, they are travelling
backward from the Last War to the 1870s. So the coolest stuff that they
can hint about is stuff they've seen, which is only slightly more
futuristic than the stuff we have now in real life. Why aren't Manitou
from farther into the future whispering anything good? Because the
future that Stone made happen pretty much ended technologically with the
Last War -- no one is inventing new stuff, so the Manitou have nothing
to say. The Reckoners just needed to get the Last War to happen on
their cheatin' second trip thru history, so Stone kills good guys and
Manitous try to steer scientists into building the Atomic Ghost Rock
Bombs that they know can be built. All this is explained better in one
of the Green Books, but I don't recall which.

I believe it was once stated that real science couldn't be derived from
Mad Science because it was magical in nature. Also, a lot of the real
scientists of our time probably went the way of the mad since it was
easier, hence the slow down in real technological advancement. Imagine
this, you are a scientist drawing upon the work of hundreds and
thousands of other scientists in your field. Now imagine that the number
of other scientists is only a handful and ask yourself, how much would
your work be slowed by not having other sources to work with.
