Funny, I was just reading a few main-arc adventures and I had the
same reaction to Boise Horror -- No Way!
But then, I thought they were all for it in the finale of Doom Comes
to Frogtown, and they all pulled through. Some were not in great
shape, but they made it. (The Cyborg is double-chipping his healing
rolls in the following days ...)
The bottom line is, posses often put the best-suited character into
the fight, roll enormous damage to the baddies (and sometimes to the
extras), and the fate chips and vamooses let them walk away from
trouble that would turn an NPC to raspberry jam. Usually.

Well, there *are* weak characters. My DL character, for example, is
next to useless in a fight but can do some other things amazingly.
Players can get those losers offed quickly, play them for laughs, or
whatever. But a few monster-PCs in the group will stomp baddies you
thought were invincible. That's why Stone has no stats.
