[HOE] The Unity Revealed... finally!

Hi. I used to be a regular on this list, but my HoE game ended, I fell into
an EverQuest addiction, bought a house, moved jobs, etc..in short, I kind
of lost track of it. But I think I'm back for good now. And it's because of
The Unity.

So.. The Unity. Wow.
Let me say that again - WOW.

I've always been something of a Deadlands geek (always been something of a
geek, at that), so praise from me isn't uncommon. However, I must say that
The Unity may be the finest adventure in the Deadlands line. I'm partial to
Canyon o' Doom & Urban Renewal as well, but The Unity is soooo good.

There are, of course, some flaws here and there. There is a lot of canned
speech before and during battles, which neither my players or I care for
(they're usually saying "yeah yeah.. I just kill this jackass while he's
talking!"), and sometimes I felt like the battles were more Marshal
narration rather than Posse-fighting, but when you're dealing with 100,000+
people in a war, I guess some concessions must be made.

I have to say the jury's still out on the Quick Combat chart as well. I
understand the necessity for it, and I think it's very clever. But I also
think it sort of screws the characters who aren't "melee" types - I
have(had) a few in my posse that add more to the game than the ability to
crush skulls, and the Quick Combat doesn't seem to allow for those
characters to 1) live very long, or 2) gain chips from the battle. But thems
the breaks I guess! I will make a final decision when I actually see it in
action. And of course, I can alter it with them in mind.

But forget those (murder, murder) minor details. The adventure itself
absolutely rocks! So much (murder, murder!) information comes out, so many
nasty, nasty tricks, plot twists, muties, new monsters, (murder, murder),
and from the Epilogue we see more of the nature of the hunting grounds as
well! (I have been chomping at the bit for the Black Book for years now!)

If there are any Marshals out there wondering if Unity is worth the
pricetag - I say it's worth it, and more.

PLUS! I was right about the Harbinger. Go me! I had this figured out I guess
around early 2000 and posted my thoughts on the list. I was off on a few
details, I'm sure, but this /was/ 2 years ago. ;-) hehe

Shane, thank you from the deepest, blackest parts of my heart for The Unity.
I can't wait to run my posse through this meatgrinder. And I know they're
gonna have a damn good time going through it.

I just hope I can come to Origins again this year. Speaking of which, is the
dinner happening again, or is everyone just going to GenCon?

the OT list...
