I actually look at it the other way around. Most people have a few packs of
cards lying around, certainly if you have 5 people playing you have more
than enough dice, the only thing that might be hard to get a hold of are
poker chips. But they wont cost much at all. On the other hand, if you want
to play a d20 system you have to buy at least the DM guide and the players
guide. Not sure what else, but for me in Australia, they both cost more
than $40 each (I think The Unity was like $48 or $54.) Then you have to buy
the source book for the system you want to play. So you would think that
the source book would have more material in it because they don't have to
explain the rules again. Only problem is that they don't have more material
in it because the rules are never quite right so they have to tell you the
changes.
The net effect of this is that when I saw Weird Wars on the shelf I looked
and saw it was a d20 system. Now as much as I wanted to buy it and play it,
I can't really justify more than $120 (probably more like $140) just for
one new system. Especially when I can buy 3 useful books of another system
or even 3 new books with complete systems in them. You may say that once
you outlay the money for the core d20 system books you can just buy the
other books. But why bother paying for 2+ books for a system I am not
interested in? Maybe someone can explain it to me so that it makes sense.
While I am in a griping mood ;-) Would anyone (Shane?) know how much more
it costs to bind a book properly? I'm looking at my hard cover HoE main
rule book and seeing the whole Junker section falling out, with a few of
the colour pages already gone I just want to scream. I know that I'd
personally pay more for a book that had proper bindings, especially for a
hard cover book. I really hate the fake string bound books that actually
use glue. If you want an idea of how a hard cover book should be bound,
most of the White Wolf ones are really really well done. (and they don't
seem to cost much more ~$5)
Well, I'm done ;-)
