[HOE] Why every marshall should fudge dice in HoE
So your marshall never fudges dice but your character has never died.....
When that bad guy takes a shot at you, and the damage is anywhere from zero to infinity, and you've never seen the damage hit the 50 range.....
That's a sign, and it's either a sign of a precognative marshall who knews the party capabilities (And the dice rolls to come) to the angstrom...
Or...
The marshall just doesn't try to put the party up against anything challenging. Pushing the envelope means risking disaster and dice fudging can mitigate that. I'm amused that one person here is a 'Realism Nazi' in a game where people throw green lightning from their fingertips.
But every now and again, a masrhall should try to push the envelope, and when he invariably pushes it too far (He is human after all), he can backpedal with some 'lucky dice'. John Goff taught me that if anything. He never fudges dice, his adventures are bloodbaths, and in a campaign run like that you'd have to make a new character every other session. It only took one adventure from him for me to think "This is a massacre, and massacres aren't that much fun".
No one has addressed the point that making characters for DL is too much bother to have to do every other session. Kill 'em off in Call of Cthulhu, char gen is simple.
Really, would movies be any fun if the one in a million shots only worked one in a million times? Or if Luke Skywalker were to be shot and killed by an anonymous Storm Troope (Sure, they have 1d4 in shooting, but they can get lucky as much as anyone). And RPG's have similar movie elements (Especially Deadlands).
