Don't make the attack random. And don't make it an "attack."

Your posse is indoctrinating people with this book and copies of it. The
Agency and/or the Rangers are going to find out about it. They will get the
book.

Now, I'm not saying just surround the posse with Rangers or Agents and
demand the book. Go the simple route. They find out who has the book.
They send in an agent to seduce the owner. The next morning the book and
their bedmate are gone. They have no idea who was behind the whole thing.

If that doesn't work, just try something else that plays on the posse's (or
just one member's) weakness. Both the North and the South can take the time
to figure out their opposition. And in the end, if nothing else works, have
a gyro spray 500 gallons of green liquid on the party. It's a Mad Scientist
invention for spies; it melts all wood based products into goo. The spies
use it to destroy secret documents. The book, all their copies, the stocks
and hilts on all their guns, and any other wood just melt away to nothing.
And they are left standing there wondering what the hell just happened.

Of course, I prefer that one side or the other get the book. If your posse
has done such a good job of keeping it safe, they should be rewarded in a
way. Whoever gets the book, realizes the true intent of the Reckoners.
They should try to alter the course of history, and who better to recruit
than those people who already know what's going on. But that's another
story...

"You smell that? Do you smell that? ...Ghost Rock, son. Nothing else in the
world smells like that. I love the smell of ghost rock in the morning. You
know, one time we had a hill bombed, for twelve hours. When it was all over
I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' Yank body. The
smell, you know that sulphurous smell, the whole hill. Smelled like...
victory. Someday this war's gonna end..."
