Black guns are indeed explained in the non-players
section. So don't worry about it now.

As far as Lost Colony goes, the "Banshee Screams"
novel is almost required reading as far as additional
background information goes. I'm not sure whether this
is a good or bad thing really. Up to your Marshal
whether they allow you to read it or now.
