The demons, devils, assassins, and so forth were officially removed with the
advent of 2nd edition in 1989, and not replaced until 3rd edition in 2000. In a
hobby that has only existed for 27 years, I think an 11-year period counts as a
"long-term change".

The antics of BADD and similar groups may not have caused much in the way of
*legal* troubles for the industry, but they did cause considerable financial
damage simply because a lot of teenagers were forbidden by their parents to buy
the books. In an industry that is already barely profitable, and with the wave
of OGL D20 product threatening to crest and fall at any time, this is not a
threat that can be dismissed as insignificant.
