Offhand, I think it's a syndrome that many movies made from a niche
source like RPGs, popular series, etc suffer from. The creators don't
understand the source and the fans, and assume that the stereotypical
rabid fanboy gamer is everything there ever has been, and made a movie
for that when even most rabid fanboy gamers have at least a portion of
their being that wants believable, well-done plots and acting in
addition to kick-ass fight scenes and quotable lines.
Peter Jackson seems to understand this, even though he's taking his
share of abuse for the cuts to keep each LotR movie down to three
hours...
