At first I thought you were asking for tips on how to run HOE, but then I 
realized you said player.  So here is a much shorter list of tips

1) Learn the rules.  You don't need to know them backwards and forwards but 
especially in that big of a group a Marshall will appreciate people having a 
good feel for the rules so he doesn't have to explain everything.

2) Don't play a AB(Arcane Background) to start. Just be a normal human.  
This will get you familiar with all the basic rules without having you to 
know all the unique rules for each different AB.

3) Remember Ammo and boots.  This could just might be how I run and others 
in my group do. Remember this is a post apoc setting.  So everything is 
scarce.  Always make sure you have ammo, and always conserve what you 
have(thats why a good sword, bat, or sharp Hockey stick is your best 
friend).  Always remember to have fresh food, water, and an extra pair of 
boots.  Trust me.  Finding untainted food is tough, untainted water even 
tougher,  And it always seems impossible to find another pair of boots in 
your size, if your old ones get fragged.

4) Have fun.  That's the most important tip.  Its a great game, have fun 
with it, and BTW welcome to the list :)
