Plus, most automatic weapons are built to compensate for the recoil in one way or another, with features such as muzzle brakes that deflect some of the blast upward to keep the muzzle from climbing too badly, plus the (generally) heavier weight of the weapon itself, which absorbs some of the recoil also. Double-tapping with a pistol not only fights against the jerk of the trigger, but trying to bring the muzzle back roughly on target to squeeze off that second round a fraction of a second later. On a pistol like a .45 with a kick, it's a pretty good trick to do it effectively, compared to squeezing off a 3 round burst from, say an M16.
