I like this.  If we used O for empty intersections,
what would you suggest for occupied ones?  We need
five distinctions:

1 Unoccupied
2 Occupied by unaged light piece
3 Occupied by aged light piece
4 Occupied by unaged dark piece
5 Occupied by aged dark piece

I was presuming "*xXoO" but I am flexible.

Also we could knock out rows and columns until we hit
a minimal unambiguous set.  I am running off to work
so I haven't had time to figure out what minimal would
be!

Great improvement!
