Re: [pbmserv-dev] request for a game (second try): "Carcassone"

To the first point, I would think that Carcassonne
would be a dubious candidate for pbem since the board
grows to unbounded size (okay it is bounded but not
comfortable for email display) and secondly it is not
a game witha high though to move quotient (okay at
least the way I play it :-)). I personally find the
Trax ascii display unreadable (I cut and paste moves
into a viewer) and for Carcassonne the situation would
be much worse!

Settlers might have more promise. It may even exist
somewhere. By the way, readers of this list may or
may not know about the yahoo group:

spiel-by-web@yahoogroups.com

which provides links to lots of servers with
turn-based and real-time interaction. I plug our home
here on a regular basis to anyone who will listen.

I did find out what they do on BrettSpielWelt based on
a discussion at Boardgamegeek and I was frankly
shocked. They do not only get permission but they ask
game publishers for a kickback in exchange for the
publicity and recently pulled a game because the
publisher was no longer interested in paying. I
expressed my shock that the holder of the copyright
would be paying as they had already "contributed" use
of their intellectual property, but many other people
thought this sounded like a rational system!

My current target for a next game to implement is
Gyges for which I am still trying to reach the company
(SwissGames). So far the email in their rulebook
bounced, one of the websites in their rulebook does
not exist and the second has only an "under
construction" sign, but I will not rest until I have
exhausted a snail mail letter and possibly a fax (to
Switzerland). That game is described at:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/10527

and I recently acquired a copy. I think it has a
Zertz-like flavor (combinations are king).

Cheers,

Lyman
